Philip Carter, one of eight honorary vice-presidents of Chelsea FC, and his teenage son were among four people killed in a helicopter crash yesterday - 11 years after the club's vice-chairman died in a similar tragedy.
Phillip and Andrew Carter (17), along with family friend Jonathan Waller (42) and pilot Stephen Holdich (49), were flying home after watching Chelsea's Champions League semi-final defeat at Liverpool on Tuesday night.
Their Twin Squirrel helicopter came down in woodland barely a mile from the Carters' 14th century stately home in Thornhaugh, Cambridgeshire.
In 1996 Chelsea vice-chairman Matthew Harding and four other men died when their Twin Squirrel helicopter crashed near Crewe in Cheshire as they returned from watching Chelsea play at Bolton.
Police said Carter's helicopter crashed shortly before 1am after leaving John Lennon Airport in Liverpool at 11pm on Tuesday. Carter was said to be worth more than £92 million and was in 770th place in the Sunday Times Rich List.
