Chilean striker Jose Marcello Salas will not be moving to Manchester United - or anywhere else - according to his Argentinian club River Plate. Newspaper reports in Buenos Aires claimed that United had made a £13 million bid for Salas after assistant manager Brian Kidd watched him score a hat-trick in Chile's World Cup qualifying victory over Peru at the weekend.

The Argentinian champions said yesterday that the player will not be allowed to quit the club until the end of the season.

Tottenham manager Gerry Francis was under increasing pressure yesterday after newspaper reports that former England and Barcelona manager Bobby Robson had been interviewed about his job.

Robson said at the weekend that he wanted to return to full-time coaching next season and Francis, who took over in November 1994, said on Monday that time was running out for him at Tottenham.
