ENGLAND OUTHALF Danny Cipriani yesterday signalled his intention to stay at Wasps as the club enters a new future under the ownership of business tycoon Steve Hayes. Cipriani and England colleague James Haskell are among a number of Wasps players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.
Both are marquee players who could attract lucrative offers from Wasps' big-spending rivals in the English Premiership and in France, where the Top 14 clubs are not subject to a salary cap.
Hayes, who is also managing director of Wycombe Wanderers, with whom Wasps share a ground, confirmed finalising new contracts for the club's big-name stars is his main priority. Cipriani is keen to stay but he wants assurances Wasps' plan on keeping the current squad together and remaining true to their values.
"I would like to stay at Wasps and have my future here. I've just got to know about the players who are going to stay as well," he said.
"You want to make sure you have all the young players and you have all the talented players coming through together and staying on. I think Steve is going to try and get all the contracts done as a whole team . . . The key is to keep this squad together that has been successful."
Wasps admit they cannot compete financially with some of Europe's biggest clubs but Lawrence Dallaglio, who has taken a place on the club's board in the new structure, insisted the likes of Cipriani must look beyond money.
Dallaglio will be involved in the recruitment and retention of leading players and is a firm believer Wasps offers players a better chance of fulfilling their potential, playing for England and winning trophies than any other club.
Hayes will upgrade Wasps' training ground and he confirmed the club are still on the lookout for a new stadium. But he admitted they will be based at Adams Park for the "foreseeable future" with a great deal of focus placed on building their supporter base.
