Golf Digest: Darren Clarke somehow managed a wry smile after crashing out of the Austrian Open yesterday.

Clarke stood on the 18th fairway needing just a par five to make his first cut since early February.

But on a sweltering afternoon at Fontana Golf Club, the Ulsterman was amazingly caught up in a passing squall which turned his approach shot from straightforward to treacherous, and the Ryder Cup star duly found the water which guards the front of the green.

The resulting bogey six meant a second round of 70 and halfway total of one over par, just one shot outside the cut.

"I played lovely all day, as good as I have in about a year," said Clarke, who has now missed six cuts in a row. "I had a bit of a cold putter. I gave myself a lot of really good chances, but couldn't quite make them and I'm a bit disappointed, to say the least, to make six at the last.

"It was a perfect four-iron when I got there, but by the time I hit it (against the wind) I was jumping all over a three-iron off a downhill lie."

Australia's Richard Green held the clubhouse lead on 11 under par after a 65, one ahead of Sweden's Martin Erlandsson.

Graeme McDowell shot a 69 to be on two under, while David Higgins was the only other Irishman to make the cut after a 71 had him on one under.

US PGA Tour: Padraig Harrington had to wait for two hours to complete his final hole, the ninth, after play was suspended in the St Jude Championship in Memphis last night.

When the Dubliner did return, he bogeyed the hole to fall to six over and was two shots outside the projected cut with half the field still to begin their second rounds.

Adam Scott was leading in the clubhouse on seven under par.

European Seniors Tour: Bill Longmuir took Route 66 right to the top of the leaderboard during the first round of the Jersey Seniors Classic at La Moye Golf Club.

The Scot's flawless, six-under-par 66 leaves him two shots ahead of England's Carl Mason and Bob Larratt.

Best of the Irish is Northern Ireland's Paul Leonard, who had six birdies, but three bogeys and a double in his one-under 71 that left him tied for 12th.

European Challenge Tour: Ireland's four representatives at the Vodafone Challenge endured a Friday to forget as each missed the cut.

Michael Hoey had the most disappointing day of them all, with a four over 76 forcing him out of a tournament he had briefly led after nine holes of his first round.

Sweden's Magnus A Carlsson leads by five shots on 13 under 131.

Ladies European Tour: Gwladys Nocera set the pace with a course record eight-under-par 64 before play was suspended during the first round of the KLM Ladies Open in Holland.

Ireland's Rebecca Coakley fired a 69 to share sixth on three under par. Claire Coughlan shot a 73, while Martina Gillen slipped to a 78.

LPGA Tour: Norway's Suzann Pettersen carded a five-under-par 67 in Maryland to take the early lead in the LPGA Championship on an eight-under total of 136.
