Clarke to play waiting game

Darren Clarke will give his injured hamstring as much time as possible to recover before making a decision on his participation in this week's Irish Open at Adare Manor.

Clarke, who picked up the injury in a back garden kickabout with his kids, managed just six holes of last weekend's Players Championship and also withdrew from the Wachovia Championship but still hopes to be involved in Limerick.

However, while the organisers have afforded Clarke until Wednesday morning to confirm his intentions, the medical advice received following his withdrawal in Florida would suggest the hamstring will only heal with complete rest.

"I do so want to play at Adare Manor," Clarke said at the time. "But if I aggravate the problem, it could be months rather than weeks before I am fully fit. I could have done without this, but it is no use crying about things."

Padraig Harrington, who returns to Ireland following a disappointing finish at Sawgrass, has slipped one place to 12th in the latest world rankings. Harrington has been overtaken by Ryder Cup teammate Sergio Garcia who was second to Phil Mickelson.

Harrington will be joined in Adare by David Higgins, Micheal Hoey and Noel Fox who were all given sponsor's invites.

Lee Westwood's victory in Spain, meanwhile, has lifted him up 15 places to 48th - and if he stays in the top 50 for two more weeks he will not have to qualify for next month's United States Open.
