Class of '98: where are they now

"Well, when I began playing rugby in first year I started off as a hooker before moving to outhalf and then full back. When I was starting out in the school I managed to get myself into a lot of trouble. It took a couple of people to calm me down and show me the error of my ways. I suppose my best memory of school is the camaraderie.

"We lived in each other's pockets for six years. I can tell you the little things that annoy everyone in my year and they can tell you about the things that drive me mad. In a day school, the lads would go home to their families; we were each other's family for the duration of secondary. You'd talk to guys from other schools and they would talk about sneaking out of the house for a couple of pints or going to meet a girl. We'd talk about the video we watched the previous night until 8.0 p.m. before going back for further study.

"The late Vinny Murray had a profound effect on my life outside of rugby. He used to talk to me a lot about my general attitude and when I was falling behind a little academically, which was quite often, he'd remind me that this was a school for academics as much as rugby players. It wasn't just good enough to be a good rugby player.

"I suppose my abiding memories of the cup final win were Rory McEneaney humming a tune as we were going out on to the pitch for the final and the whole Terenure team on the ground, McEneaney on his knees with his arms in the air, and Henry Bourke with a cheeky grin on his face. My only regret was that we never got play against Blackrock's `Dream team.' I think it would have been a good game."
