Cork 3-11 Limerick 0-12:TWO FIRST-half goals paved the way for a comprehensive McGrath Cup quarter-final win for Cork at Limerick Gaelic Grounds.
Fiachra Lynch had the opening two points for Cork but Liam Costelloe and Ian Ryan (free) had Limerick level before Kevin McMahon edged the Leesiders back in front.
Cork’s first goal came after 19 minutes. McMahon, sent a long ball to Jason Sexton out on the wing and when he crossed Lynch outjumped Barry Fitzpatrick and crashed a low shot to the net.
Goal number two was a superb effort by McMahon who soloed his way through from 25 yards and beat Wallace again.
That left the score 2-4 to 0-3 and Cork went on to lead 2-5 to 0-5 at half-time.
They had the opening point on the resumption by Denis O’Sullivan but Limerick hit three points from frees by Ian Ryan and one from play by Liam Costelloe to get within three points of their rivals.
But their prospects of progressing ended when Denis O’Sullivan scored Cork’s third goal 15 minutes from the end of a contest in which Limerick were a big disappointment. Cork clearly benefited from an earlier outing and were much sharper as Limerick managed only seven points from play. Ian Ryan was top scorer with seven points, five from frees.
Limerick’s best chance of a goal came after 14 minutes when John Cooke was straight through but goalkeeper David Lordan made a superb save with his feet and then gathered the rebound in a goalmouth scramble.
