Notah Begay credits his brother Clint with a remarkable turnaround which has seen the 27-year-old capture the Greater Hartford Open for back-to-back victories on the USPGA Tour. Begay has now moved up to 12th in the money list with earnings of $1,418,639 from 17 tournament appearances.
He had missed seven cuts before his brother started caddying for him in May. Since then, he has been 22nd in the US Open and has added this latest success to a victory in the St Jude Classic on June 25th. "Clint's contribution to my overall approach has meant the world to me. He knows the tough times I've been through and he has a lot to do with the way I'm playing," Begay said.
The Native American was jailed for seven nights last March after he had informed a judge of a previous, out-of-state arrest, in addition to the drink-driving charge which he then faced. He felt he had let people down. But his brother, who now does the driving, said: "He owned up to it and faced the consequences. Good things happen to people like that."
So it was that at River Highlands on Sunday, Begay shot a closing 64 for a one-stroke victory over Mark Calcavecchia.
