Leinster Schools' Junior Cup/ Clongowes Wood 0 Belvedere College 0: These two will have to do it all over again as Warren Larkin's Clongowes Wood College kept dominant holders Belvedere College out in the Leinster Schools' Junior Cup first round at Donnybrook yesterday.
An edgy opening period was punctuated by numerous knock-ons and mistakes that were understandable in the circumstances. Chances to work the scoreboard were few and far between.
Clongowes could not find time inside the opposition 22. Belvedere centre Ben Woods was high and wide with a penalty in the 21st minute while right wing Donall O'Riordan was tackled into touch by Clongowes scrum-half Gerard Mullen and his opposite number Colm O'Shea was taken to earth by Darragh Cullen two yards from the line.
Clongowes also survived three perilous situations when Belvedere surged over the line. There were too many bodies in the way for referee Kevin Beggs to allow the try.
Belvedere continued to dominate territory on the turnover through the virtues of their big pack.
Woods was just off target from a 25-metre penalty in the 46th minute. But, there was no breakthrough and by the end Clongowes were growing in confidence.
