Women's Golf: Rebecca Coakley from Carlow, who halted Curtis Cup player Alison Coffey's bid to win the Irish Women's Close title for a third year in a row in June, added the Waterford Crystal-sponsored Irish Women's Strokeplay title to her list of achievements when she beat Martina Gillen on a countback at Dundalk yesterday.

Gillen from Kent State University and Beaverstown, who also lost to Coakley in the Close Championship semi-final, came from three shots back overnight to tie Coakley on six-under-par 214 after a final round of 72 but lost out to a better last 36 holes by just one shot.

Coakley laid the foundations for her second major win of the season with a superb eight-under-par 64 in the second round. Coakley was out in 31, thanks to four birdies and an eagle, and she came home in 34 by boosting her tally of birdies to six.

Defending champion Anne Laing from Vale of Leven, who was six shots off the pace going into the last round, faded over the final 18. Laing, first winner of the British women's mid-amateur championship at The Berkshire recently, shot rounds of 72 and 73 and 77 for a total of 222 - eight shots back in fourth place.
