Cobh Ramblers were aggrieved as Galway United moved into clear second place in the First Division table after a controversial 3-0 win at St Colman's Park on Saturday night.

Waterford referee Joe Casey infuriated Cobh when awarding Galway a 72nd minute penalty after Cobh's Packie Kelly and Galway substitute Eric Levine tussled in the area. Billy Clery scored his 10th goal of the season from the spot to make it 20.

The harsh decision was a particular blow to Cobh as they were pressing hard for an equaliser to Ollie Keogh's 18th minute opening goal.

It knocked Cobh right back on their heels and they never recovered; Levine added a third goal for Galway in injury time.

Kilkenny City took advantage to move within a point of Cobh with a tremendous winning goal from 18-year-old Michael Reddy giving them a 2-1 victory at Home Farm/Everton.

Reddy beat several challenges on a slalom through the Home Farm defence before cleverly feinting past goalkeeper Paul Whelan to slide the ball home on 72 minutes.

David Breen was as pleased as any of Reddy's team-mates as his poor back pass seven minutes earlier had presented Robbie Farrell with an equaliser Home Farm scarcely deserved. Trevor Vaughan had given Kilkenny a deserved lead with an albeit scrappy goal four minutes before half-time.

Tommy Lynch was fortunate not to be on the end of a defeat in his first game in charge of Limerick as improving Monaghan United had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Hogan Park.

Mike Kerley put Limerick in front from a 30th minute penalty after Robbie Best had pulled down Declan Considine.

Monaghan drew level within two minutes with a superb 35-yard strike from defender Brendan Finn before going on to dominated the second-half, twice hitting the woodwork as Limerick held out for a point.
