Collins forced to change plans

STEVE COLLINS will have a new opponent for his super middle-weight match in the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on July 5th

STEVE COLLINS will have a new opponent for his super middle-weight match in the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow on July 5th. The arranged bout between Collins and Anwar Oshana will not go ahead as planned.

It appears that Oshana had second thoughts about the size of the purse he would receive and has dropped out as a result.

Into the scene instead has stepped Craig Cummins, from Missouri, who may very well pose a tougher proposition for Collins. Cummins has had 32 fights, winning 30 of them and taking 27 of those by knock-out.

Yesterday Collins said that his for the bout would not be interrupted in any way. "The way I feel at the moment is that I want to get this fight out of the way and get on with a unification bout against Frankie Liles, possible in Scotland before the end of the year." Liles is the WBC champion, while and Collins holds the WBO belt.

Meanwhile, the British Medical Association (BMA) has again urged a total boxing ban as cruiserweight Chris Henry continued his fight for life.

Henry is "critical, but stable" at the Oldchurch Hospital, Romford, after emergency brain surgery to remove a blood clot following his defeat by Havering's Dominic Negus on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old was operated on within hours of collapsing in the ring at Grundy Park Leisure Centre, Cheshunt, although a hospital spokesman refused to reveal further details.

Henry was making only his seventh, appearance since joining the paid ranks.

"We continue to be very, concerned about the type of injuries boxers such as Mr Henry receive in the ring," said a BMA spokeswoman. "And it is why we repeat our call for a total ban on the sport."

The secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control John Morris, added: "We are all hoping and praying that Chris Henry will make a full recovery.

"It was a tremendous contest, but we dread situations like this."
