Glasgow 16 Connacht 15:Connacht's miserable record against the Glasgow Warriors continued at Firhill Arena last night.
Unforced errors, poor kicking, a pressured scrum, and an inability to build phases marked Connacht's first-half display. And having spent most of the 40 minutes in defence, they were lucky to be behind by just four points.
Once again Connacht's scrum came under immense pressure, not helped by the second-minute departure of Ronan Loughney with an injury. However, Connacht's lineout also looked distinctively shaky, and they gave away possession with too many aimless kicks.
Tim Donnelly kicked a penalty for Connacht in the fourth minute but Glasgow outhalf Colin Gregor, although missing two penalty attempts, had the sides level by the 12th minute. But the turning point came when Connacht number eight Colm Rigney was yellow-carded on 20 minutes having tackled fullback Bernardo Stortoni in the air.
Within minutes Glasgow made it count, turning the screw in the scrum after the television match official denied an opening try. Four minutes later number eight John Beattie forced his way over after a mazy run from Stortoni. Gregor added the conversion for a 10-3 lead.
Donnelly reduced the arrears with a drop goal, but within minutes of the restart Gregor cancelled that effort with a penalty.
Two Donnelly penalties and a 69th-minute drop goal put Connacht into the lead for the first time, but Gregor had the last word with a 78th-minute penalty.
