Castleknock Coll - 17 Newbridge Coll - 0: Castleknock College captured the Leinster Schools Junior League final at Donnybrook yesterday. There was not much between the two teams in the first half but Castleknock, with the more polished attack, posed the greater threat.
Newbridge were left to rue missed opportunities after the break when three attempts on the Castleknock line were unproductive. Without an established kicker, they were forced to run the ball and but for the intervention of Castleknock's outhalf, Brian Collins, they might have at least made a dint on the scoreboard.
Down 7-0 at the break, Newbridge made some territorial gains after the restart and a try seemed likely on 40 minutes when winger Mark Neylon kicked ahead but Collins managed to retrieve possession. Newbridge's raids were met with resistance and eventually when they decided to kick for goal, scrumhalf David Aherne was unable to find the range.
Castleknock had gone in front after five minutes when their impressive wing forward and captain, Eoin Mullen, released Karl Coombes out wide and the winger scored in the corner.
Collins converted but Castleknock had to wait until the last 10 minutes before finally making the game safe. Tony Iyayi went over for their second try on 52 minutes and centre Peter Conway completed the rout in the final moments.
