NUIG 1-11 Athlone 1-7Corner forward David Conway scored 1-7 as NUIG overcame Athlone IT in Athlone yesterday.
The Laois attacker gave NUIG the ideal start in the second minute, when he fired the ball to the AIT net after good play by Mark Ronaldson and Fiachra Breathnach.
The home side's only scores in the half came from Kildare's Adrian Kelly (from play) and Offaly's James Coughlan (two frees).
But points from Breathnach and Mark Ronaldson saw NUIG open up a 1-6 to 0-3 lead at half-time.
Coughlan gave AIT a lifeline with a goal from a penalty six minutes into the second half. However, two pointed frees in quick succession by Conway steadied the visitors.
