MEN'S HOCKEY:CORINTHIANS LEAD Pool A and Monkstown lead Pool B after the second last round of matches in the Irish Hockey League (IHL).

The two Dublin teams had varying fortunes but both came out the right side of a win, Corinthians taking Cork C of I 4-0 and Monkstown edging out Cork Harlequins 5-4 in a tight, fast game in Farmers Cross.

The Monkstown game was level at 2-2 at half-time before the Dublin team came from behind to snatch the winner in the 66th minute through Kyle Good after Gareth Watkins had brought the sides level at 4-4 through a penalty flick. It leaves Monkstown leading Pool B on 11 points, with YMCA close on their tails, also on 11 points.

YMCA won their match against Instonians 4-2, the goals spread among Jamie Tobin, Philip Marshall, David Robinson and Stephen Barry, while Pembroke went down badly to Banbridge. Trailing 3-0 at half-time, the Dublin side lost 6-2 but still hold on to third place in the pool, a point behind the leaders.

Corinthians’ position at the top of Pool A is more commanding with their 4-0 win over C of I providing both the points and the goals. Two strikes from Chris Pelow and one each from Dan Tracey and Gareth Davis brought Corinthians from 2-0 at half time to the victory.

They lead the pool on 13 points from second-placed Glenanne on 11 points and ’Garvey third on nine points.

Glenanne won yesterday’s match in Belfast against Annadale 5-2, with Eddie O’Malley claiming a hat-trick and Shane O’Donoghue adding two more.
