Cork called off, Gowran under real threat

This evening's meeting at Cork has been cancelled due to a waterlogged track

This evening's meeting at Cork has been cancelled due to a waterlogged track. The track was due to stage a seven-race card from 5.50pm, but extensive rain has left officials with no choice but to abandon.

"The track has been found to be unfit for racing due to waterlogging," said Cliff Noone, press officer of the Irish Turf Club.

Course officials hope to reschedule the meeting.

The meeting was originally intended to be a mixed card of flat and hurdle races, but heavy rain had already forced officials to abandon the flat races.

However, further rain left the track unraceable and the whole card was abandoned after an inspection at 8am.

Sunday's meeting at Gowran Park is also under threat from the heavy rain and an inspection will be held at 8am today.

"The course is currently unraceable and I don't think people at Gowran Park are optimistic at the moment," said Noone. "It is pelting down with rain."
