THE directors of Cork City will meet tonight to "clear the air" after a week of considerable uncertainty for the club which has been the subject of takeover rum ours almost since the present board rescued it from liquidation in January.
There has not, however, been any further offer for the club and, "come Friday," said director Chris Herlihy "we will be turning to the task ahead, which is a fairly onerous one, and from then it should be full steam ahead."
The meeting, Herlihy added is intended to set the current position straight after a week in which "some people in the club have been reading different things in the papers and it is only fair to let everyone know what is happening."
One problem, however, remains, the position of one major shareholder, local businessman Peter O'Regan. He has stated his intention is to sell his stake in Cork City, although this may be clarified tomorrow When the club issues a statement regarding its future.
Meanwhile, Dundalk where similar boardroom reorganisations are a thing of the recent past, hope to appoint St Mirren's John Hewitt as their manager "within a week. Club officials expect to discuss the position with the former Aberdeen player over the weekend.
The 33 year old, who scored in Aberdeen's 1983 Cup Winners Cup final victory, is a highly qualified coach and is believed to be interested in the job but has yet to agree final terms for such a move.
If he does go to Oriel Park his first task is likely to be holding together the club's panel of players for next season in the face of some competition from Premier Division rivals Finn Harps and Derry City.
Richie Purdy, Keith Long, Stephen Kelly and Matt Britton are among the players who have been offered new contracts by Dundalk but have yet to confirm whether they will sign or not and club chairman Enda McGuill said last night that they would now "hold fire until the new man is in place."
Dundalk have confirmed that the tickets for the pre-season friendly against Liverpool will go on sale tomorrow week with admission to the August 4th game costing £10 for adults and £5 for children. Seats in the stand will be double that.
Other friendlies confirmed by the National League are the visits of Aberdeen and St Johnstone to Shelboure on July 16th and 27th as well as Hearts and Crewe Alexandra to Shamrock Rovers on July 27th and August 2nd. All of these games will take place at Tolka Park.
