Richie Coughlan surged through the field in the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii on Thursday, when he fired a five-under-par 65 to be just one shot adrift of the lead, held jointly by John Daly, Larry Mize and Brad Faxon.
Playing at the end of the morning starters from the first tee, Coughlan opened with a birdie, made another at the third and posted his fifth three of the front nine at the eighth to reach the turn in 32.
After a birdie three at the 12th, he dropped his only shot of the day at the 16th but recovered with successive birdies at the 17th and 18th.
