ATHLETICS: ALISTAIR CRAGG last night took the scalp of the top Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, but even at that his performance was only good enough for fifth place in a high-quality 3,000 metres at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.
Cragg finished in 7:37.84, more than a full second ahead of Eliud Kipchoge, the former world 5,000 metres champion and silver medallist at the Beijing Olympics.
The Irishman finished just 1.92 seconds behind the winner, former double world champion from Kenya, Bernard Lagat, who now runs for the US, while Saif Shaheen of Quatar was second in 7:36.87.
In Geneva, Switzerland, David Gillick had a good win over 400 metres in an impressive 45.53 seconds. He defeated two Britons, Conrad Williams and Robert Tobin, who ran 45.70 and 46.29 respectively.
