MEN'S HOCKEY: A four-goal haul by Ross Cullen, including the winner, maintained Trinity's roller-coaster season as they edged out Naas, 5-4, in the second round of the Leinster Senior (Mills) Cup at Santry on Saturday, writes Dermot Ashmore.
Trinity, with John Blakeney also contributing to the tally, which has hit the 16-mark in the last three matches, led 4-2 at one stage but Naas finished spiritedly to force extra time at 4-4. Then, Cullen (in his first game since returning from South America) notched the "golden goal".
Also through to the quarter-finals are St Brendan's-Phoenix Park, buttressed by Dublin footballer Dessie Farrell, who beat Skerries 1-0 in another all second-division tie.
Clontarf, though 4-1 down entering the last quarter, stretched Railway Union to a hearty degree at Glasnevin, where Peter Maybury and Ross McMullen reduced the visitors' winning margin to 4-3.
Goalkeeper Florian Klemt had kept the northsiders in contention, though the O'Brien brothers were in full flow for Railway.
Elsewhere, second-division sides crumbled in spite of defiant performances between the posts by Dougie Keeley for Bray and Freddie Duffy for St James's Gate in 4-0 and 7-0 defeats by Pembroke Wanderers and Glenanne, respectively.
Andrew Walker hit his third hat-trick of the season as YMCA overpowered depleted Portrane 10-0 at Dardistown. YM must now face Glenanne, the holders, in the last-eight stage.
Another top-drawer tie will involve Pembroke and Three Rock Rovers, whose 6-0 win over UCD at Belfield included a hat-trick for Christian Judd.
Rovers are in the best of form to tackle Glenanne in the Neville Cup final on St Stephen's Day. In Saturday's most highly-geared Mills Cup pairing, Corinthians earned a quarter-final contest with Trinity by beating Monkstown 2-1 at Whitechurch Park, with Colin Stewart showing typical opportunism to grab the winner.
