CRICKET: This is the last weekend of senior club cricket in Leinster, with three WMK Leinster Senior League matches on offer on Saturday, while the Leinster v Old Belvedere Section B game at Rathmines on Sunday will bring the curtain down on the season.

At the time of writing, the result of the North County Munster Reds Section A mid-week match at Balrothery is not known. But the outcome of that particular encounter is of academic interest.

Phoenix, the winners of the Lewis Hohn Williams-sponsored Senior League in the earlier part of the season, are the WMK Section A champions with eight wins from their 12 matches, with North County and Malahide in hot pursuit. Despite their successive home and away victories over Malahide, Pembroke have ended up last in Section A, with Merrion just a few points ahead of them. Both have been relegated, which means that next season, the WMK League Section A will be dominated by the north Dublin clubs.

Clontarf have ended the season on a high note, as they took the WMK League Section A championship, with The Hills the runners-up. So there will be nothing at stake when the clubs meet in their final match of the season at Milverton on Saturday.

Old Belvedere and YMCA ended at the bottom of the Section B table, but all that that means is that both clubs will have another fight on their hands next season to regain their Section A status. For out of Section B, there is no redemption, and no relegation, in other words.

A piece of local cricket history was set during the week when Thinnus Fourie scored 113 in Clontarf's defeat of Leinster, to give him 1,000 runs for the season, along with Jason Molins and Jeremy Bray of Phoenix. This is the first time ever that three Leinster batsmen have each reached the Holy Grail of 1,000 runs in a summer.
