Cycling: Murphy fails to finish

Cyclist Deidre Murphy was one of eight competitors not to finish the women's road race

Cyclist Deidre Murphy was one of eight competitors not to finish the women's road race. It was a disappointing debut Olympic experience for the 42-year-old New York-based Irishwoman.

Rain began to fall on the third lap of the seven-lap race, making conditions difficult for the field of 58 riders. There were, in fact, several crashes because of the slippery roads, but none of the riders were seriously injured. The race was completed in 3:06.31 at an average speed of 38.51kph.

The gold medal went to Leontien Zijlaard of the Netherlands, with strong favourite Jeannie Longo-Ciprrelli of France back in 26th place.
