Eamonn Darcy was unable to shed the bridesmaid's tag after enduring his seventh runner-up finish on the European Seniors Tour at the Scandinavian Senior Open in Denmark today.
Having thrust himself to within one stroke of the lead thanks to a brilliant second round of seven under par 64, Darcy's putting problems resurfaced on the final day at Helsingør Golf Club and he closed with a 69 to finish two strokes behind the winner, Japan's Katsuyoshi Tomori.
Tomori produced a bogey-free 66, five under par, to claim the €39,258 first prize and his first European title with a 14 under par total of 199.
Darcy, a winner of four titles in his heyday on The European Tour when he also played in four Ryder Cups, has now played 35 times on the European Seniors Tour without tasting victory. He has finished second on seven occasions and inside the top ten a further ten times.
On this occasion he tied for second place with Spain's José Rivero, a team-mate of Darcy's in the European side that won The 1987 Ryder Cup at Muirfield Village.
Rivero, the overnight leader and a winner of two titles this year, closed with a disappointing round of 70 to join Darcy on 12 under par and collect a cheque for €26,246.
