Daylami salvaged European pride and exorcised a particularly painful memory for Frankie Dettori in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.

Going into the race, 45 European horses had bitten the dust in Breeders' Cup races at the Florida venue, but this statistic was soon consigned to history.

Bouncing back from his Arc de Triomphe failure in style, Godolphin's high class grey settled in midfield as Buck's Boy, the 1998 winner, tried to make all.

However, the ex-French customer stamped his immense class on proceedings by casting aside Royal Anthem and Buck's Boy with nonchalant ease to win going away.

Dettori, clearly still haunted by the terrible mistake he made in the 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic, shouted to the crowd clearly to make a point: "What about Swain?"

He later added: "It took me six months to get over Swain and a lot of people tried to bury me. Revenge is a dish best eaten cold, but Daylami has got me out of trouble."

Another French import to win on the card was the ex-Bary runner, Silic, in the Mile. A win which gains added kudos as it was achieved from a tough 12 draw.

Fellow Europeans, Docksider and Lend A Hand, both ran immense races in third and fourth but were still found wanting.

It was similar story with Aidan O'Brien's Stravinsky, who ran sixth behind the track record equalling Artax in the Sprint.

Stravinsky travelled like a seasoned pro during the race but was unable to find the required extra at the business end.

Michael Kinane said: "The horse has travelled very sweetly but he just couldn't sustain his effort. I was hoping for great things turning in."

O'Brien, having saddled Thady Quill to finish third on Friday, had a mixed afternoon.

Mull of Kintyre (fourth) did best of his pair in the Juvenile, won by the impressive Anees - a potential future American classic winner.

Brahms was seventh in the same race. Whereas Warrior Queen struggled home in seventh in the Juvenile Fillies.

Godolphin's Almutawake was fifth in a Classic won by Cat Thief, and Luca Cumani's Zomaradah did best of the old continent distaffers by finishing third to Soaring Softly in the inaugural Filly And Mare Turf.

The crowd of 45,124 was the smallest attendance figure of the three Breeders' Cup Meetings held at the Florida venue.

However, combined on and off course betting turnover was a Breeders' Cup record of $93,781,593. Here is a show destined to run and run.
