University College Cork (women) and Queen's University (men) completed highly successful intervarsity campaigns in Limerick yesterday, during which both teams were unbeaten, by carrying off the Chilean and Mauritius Cups, respectively, on penalty strokes after their finals ended in draws.

Queen's beat UCC in the men's semi-finals before getting the better of Dublin City University, who had ousted Jordanstown. DCU were the surprise packets of the tournament, finishing unbeaten in `play' thanks notably to the Bane brothers, Eamonn and David, Eoin Connolly, Bruce Stirling and Kevin Howard, all of whom play their club hockey elsewhere.

Malcolm Jeffers equalised for DCU 10 minutes into the second half of the final after Queen's had taken an early first-half lead but extra time failed to separate the teams and then goalkeeper Neil Slane defied DCU in the strokes competition (4-2).

After losing several of their key players from last season UCC's women were not among the favourites to win the Chilean Cup but after beating UCD 2-1 in the semi-finals, their goalkeeper Orla McCarthy, whose very participation in the event was in doubt after she picked up a dose of glandular fever, helped them to the first success in the competition for five years.

There were no goals after extra time but McCarthy pulled off crucial saves in the shoot-out to give her side a 4-3 victory over UUJ - a success that went some way towards compensating the Cork students for their defeat on strokes to Trinity two years ago.
