Dutch defender Frank de Boer looks likely to miss the rest of Euro 2004 after suffering an ankle injury in his side's quarter-final victory over Sweden on Saturday.

De Boer, making a Dutch record 112th international appearance, was substituted during the first half after hurting himself as he made a tackle on Sweden midfielder Fredrik Ljungberg.

"It has been getting worse from the moment I was substituted," De Boer said yesterday.

"It hurts more and more. Tomorrow I will have an MRI scan, but it feels like I've bruised a bone or torn a ligament."

De Boer said he would stay with the Dutch squad even if he cannot play in the semi-final against Portugal on Wednesday and the final - should the Dutch reach it - next Sunday.

"It's obvious that I will stay with the group," he said. "I will try to give them my support and help if needed. I think that is my duty."

Midfielder Jason McAteer has completed a move from Sunderland to Leicester City after his contract at the Stadium of Light expired.

The Ireland international has agreed a one-year contract at the Walkers Stadium after being told he could leave the Black Cats at the end of last season.

"Jason is a player who has operated at the top level and brings a wealth of experience to the club," Foxes boss Micky Adams said.

"He's an excellent player and we had to beat off a number of clubs for his signature."
