HOCKEY/Obituary: The death has occurred in Dublin, aged 94, of Paul O'Reilly, an honorary life member of the Irish Hockey Association.
An all-round sportsman with a special passion for hurling (representing Dublin at minor level), he became increasingly involved with hockey, first as a player with Fairview CYMS and then Corinthians, before becoming highly active in the running and promotion of the game.
Notably he was an indefatigable figure in taking all roles in the Leinster Hockey Umpires' Association (president, honorary treasurer and secretary), as well as being much respected as an umpire in which capacity he officiated in schools' and under-21 internationals.
He was also earnestly committed to schools' cup competitions as well as being largely instrumental in introducing the sport to the Community Games.
Above all, Paul O'Reilly was one of those total enthusiasts who keep any game vibrant, and he will be fondly remembered for his greeting, "have a cup of tea before you go". ... - D.A.
