Defiant Martin demands more time to recover

Miguel Angel Martin last night vowed to fight any attempt to rule him out of the Ryder Cup

Miguel Angel Martin last night vowed to fight any attempt to rule him out of the Ryder Cup. The 35-yearold, whose place is in jeopardy because of a wrist injury, has been told to undergo a fitness test tomorrow in Madrid that the Ryder Cup Committee say will determine whether he is able to play at Valderrama or not.

However, Martin said he is likely to refuse to hit any shots and wants to be given more time to prove his fitness for the September 26-28th clash with the United States.

"Seve and the Ryder Cup Committee say I have to give the answer on Wednesday. But it is impossible," he said. "I am not going to say anything about my condition because I don't know anything about medicine and I think it is up to my doctor to say whether I hit shots. But at the moment I am not going to hit any balls because I can't.

"I don't know yet what they want me to do, but I don't think anybody is allowed to throw me away. The side is 10 players and two pick-ups and I am one of the 10.

"I won my spot on the golf course and it's not going to be taken away from me in the office. I feel that at least one person does not want me on the team and I think they are going to try to pull me out.

"I don't want to say anything more about that at the moment, but I have the proof already in my hand."

Martin, speaking on the telephone from his home, then rustled a piece of paper and said: "Listen, listen."

The announcement of captain Seve Ballesteros's two wild cards was postponed from Sunday to Thursday because of the Martin situation. Now the dispute is threatening to overshadow the entire build-up to the match, being held in Spain for the first time.

Martin has entered the British Masters at the Forest of Arden in the week before the Ryder Cup and said: "Maybe they pull me out of the team and I win the tournament. That would be a big thing then, eh? There's no way I am going to be fit by Wednesday and I think that's silly, but I think I have to be fit on September 26th, not September 3rd."

Ken Schofield, executive director of the European Tour, said at the weekend that after taking legal advice the Ryder Cup Committee had decided to make Martin prove his fitness tomorrow.

If he is then ruled unavailable Jose Maria Olazabal will take the 10th and last automatic spot held by Martin on the final points table and Ballesteros will be able to name both Nick Faldo and Jesper Parnevik as his wild cards.

Martin has not played since the Open in July, had surgery on August 5th and had the plaster taken off his wrist only a week ago. He has not been able to hit a single shot, but his doctor thinks he could be able to start pitching by the end of this week.
