National Football League: The Derry county board has responded critically to reports of a melee at the end of the county's NFL victory over Wexford on Sunday. Coming just a week after the unruly scenes at Omagh, the fresh outbreak of indiscipline was embarrassing for the GAA.

The CDC will consider Limerick referee Michael Meade's report before deciding on what action to take, but Derry PRO Gerry Donnelly rejected any depiction of the match - which featured 12 yellow cards - as being a re-run of the controversial Tyrone-Dublin game of seven days previously.

"I think some sort of sensible perspective is needed here. There were three double yellows throughout the afternoon in what was a poor match, a bit niggly, but the referee was always in control. At no time did it ever boil over."

The incident in question broke out after a challenge on Derry's Paul Carton by Wexford forward David Fogarty, who was pushed in the back by a Derry player.

Donnelly denied that as many as 25 players had taken part in the subsequent brawling.

"There were eight or nine players who got involved," says Donnelly. "The pushing and shoving lasted about a minute at most before Fogarty was dispatched to the line. At the end we shook hands with the Wexford officials and there was nothing more about it.

"There was absolutely nothing else like that during the rest of the match. At half-time a Wexford supporter was shouting at the referee to get a Derry jersey and I recommended he get in touch with Joe Clarke at the Derry supporters' shop. But that was as heated as the exchanges got."
