Paddy McCloskey's 16th minute goal gave them a four-point half-time lead (1-11 to 1-10). Michael Kirkpatrick contributed 0-11 to Derry's total, while Paul Braniff was Down's top scorer with 0-6.

Connacht and Mayo champions, Ballina Stephenites are out of the Mayo SFC. The holders were held to a 0-12 to 1-9 draw by Claremorris on Saturday, thus ensuring Castlebar Mitchels and Claremorris qualify from their group for the last eight in the title race.
