FAI CUP, Derry City 2 St Patrick's Athletic 0: Derry City ended St Patrick's Athletic's 13-match unbeaten league run at the Brandywell last night to set up an interesting FAI Cup quarter-final tie at the same venue next Thursday night.
The Northern side will point to a superb opening goal from former Republic of Ireland international David Kelly as the platform for this success.
Kelly rose majestically in the 34th minute to divert an Eddie McCallion cross to the net to send the 3,000 spectators wild with delight.
But Pat Dolan's men spurned a glorious opportunity to equalise in the 41st minute when Philip Hughes drove his shot into the side netting.
After the break the Dubliners were unlucky when a Ger McCarthy effort from close range struck a post while in the 78th minute defender Colm Foley headed an effort off the Derry crossbar.
But it was the home side who had the final say in the 92nd minute. Former UCD midfielder Ciaran Martyn broke from midfield before driving a superb right-foot shot into the corner of the net from 25 yards.
