Derry City - 3 Sligo Rovers - 1: Derry City bounced back from Monday night's Setanta Cup defeat by Glentoran with this deserved victory at a breezy Brandywell last night.

And while Stephen Kenny's men may have bossed the ball throughout the first half, they failed to significantly trouble Sligo goalkeeper John O'Hara.

But two goals in four minutes in the second half saw the home side on their way to their second league victory of the season.

Derry made the breakthrough in the 48th minute when Paddy McCourt raced clear on the right and his cut-back was turned into his goal by Sligo central defender Liam Burns.

And the home side doubled their lead in the 52nd minute when a McCourt corner was not cleared and Gary Beckett drove home from eight yards.

And Derry ended this match as a contest in the 69th minute from the penalty spot.

An under-weighted back-pass from Sligo defender Keith Foy was latched on to by the alert Mark Farren and the striker was upended inside the box by the advancing goalkeeper.

Farren dusted himself down before sending O'Hara the wrong way from the spot.

The determined visitors refused to give up and reduced the deficit four minutes later when captain Michael McNamara hammered the ball high into the net following a Foy corner.
