Derry win bottom-of-the-table tie

UCD... 0 Derry City..

UCD ... 0 Derry City ... 2: Former UCD player Ciaran Martyn scored on his old hunting ground last night at Belfield Park to seal Derry City's first win of the season and lift them off the foot of the table.

Already leading through Gary Beckett's 33rd-minute opener, Martyn struck a cracking drive from 12 yards about 11 minutes from time to seal their 2-0 win.

Derry took the lead after 34 minutes when Gary Beckett netted his second of his season, unleashing a dipping 25-yard shot which seemed to catch UCD goalkeeper Barry Ryan out completely.

Before that there had been little goalmouth activity from two sides lanquishing in the wrong end of the Premier Division table. Derry's attacking options were not helped by the loss of former Republic of Ireland striker David Kelly with an Achilles tendon injury.
