Tyrone SFC Final/ Dromore 0-14 Coalisland 0-4: All things come to those who wait. Dromore, after a sequence of near misses, finally registered the club's first county title in 74 years of existence before a big crowd of around 11,000 in Healy Park, Omagh yesterday.
Dromore used their greater experience and demonstrated more of an edge than a younger Coalisland team, who struggled to maintain the form that had brought them within one match of a first title in 17 years. Wing back Seán O'Neill kicked three early points, including a free, to settle Dromore and set them on their way.
The second half was a procession, as Coalisland tried to conjure up the goals that might have made inroads on the eight-point interval deficit. But Dromore held firm and right up until the end were defending zealously.
The spirit was perfectly illustrated halfway through the second half when Richard Thornton got a glimpse of an opportunity only for Dromore captain Fabian O'Neill to come charging out on to the ball, bowling aside anyone in his way and clearing to Ryan McMenamin, who set up a counter-attack.
The main suspense from then on concerned who would end up as the championship's top scorer. Three players - Coalisland replacement Paddy Early and Dromore pair Eoin McCusker and Shaun O'Neill - were in contention. McCusker and O'Neill were pegged together on three points until the 51st minute when O'Neill, a constant threat at full forward, hit a fourth before adding a fifth to make sure.
Dromore controlled the exchanges from the start. Centrefield was well on top with veteran Micky Garry taking good catches and driving his team forward. Up front, the forwards moved intelligently to create time and space and the main concerns for Noel McGinn's team in the opening quarter was their domination of possession wasn't being reflected on the scoreboard.
That changed, as Dromore continued to turn the screw and take their chances - they recorded only one wide throughout the first half although a couple of shots also came back off the woodwork - while Coalisland, having initially hinted at the menace that has made them such a formidable goalscoring unit, fell away completely.
They had already found the going tough with McMenamin directing an unyielding half-back operation, which made it very hard for Coalisland to construct decent attacks.
Thornton on a couple of occasions made direct runs at the centre of the defence, which caused some concern and it took a spectacular intervention from McMenamin to rescue the situation in the 12th minute. Thornton again set up a chance in the 20th minute, which Fabian O'Neill deflected into the path of late replacement Gerard Toner whose shot went wide.
Coalisland captain Peter Donnelly moved from full back to centrefield towards the end of the half, but the main effect was to destabilise further the full-back line.
In the closing 10 minutes before the break, Dromore hit the pedals and added five points from play to stretch the margin to eight, 0-9 to 0-1. It could have been worse for Coalisland, as Shaun O'Neill drew a good save from Johnny Curran in injury-time.
Coalisland needed to make a good start if they were to maintain any hope of making up ground, but for 20 minutes into the second half the teams managed one point each.
McMenamin set up Shaun O'Neill for a chance that was just scrambled clear. There was to be little further respite for Coalisland and they were outscored 0-4 to 0-2 in the closing 10 minutes to give the winners a convincing 10-point margin.
Dromore will play Down champions Mayobridge in the first round of the provincial championship.
