Frankie Dettori is resigned to spending Saturday afternoon in front of the television instead of taking part in the Champions Day meeting at Newmarket after losing his appeal against a whip ban imposed at York last week.

Dettori's ban, which covers this Friday and Saturday and continues next Monday and Tuesday, came after he partnered the two-year-old Strahan to victory in the EBF Budget Rent A Car Maiden Stakes last Wednesday.

On the day, he was found to have used his whip with excessive force and the local stewards took exception to his actions.

Dettori emerged from a one-hour hearing at the Jockey Club in London and said: "I failed in my appeal. I had a good hearing. They kept the four-day suspension, and that's it. I shall be watching it on the TV. We gave it a shot but unfortunately we didn't manage to convince the panel."
