NFL Division Two semi-final/ Donegal 0-14 Westmeath 1-9: Donegal qualified for the Division Two final when they produced a late scoring burst in the final 10 minutes of their semi-final clash with Westmeath at Kingspan Breffni Park yesterday to claim a place in the decider against Louth.
Westmeath enjoyed the better of the disappointing early exchanges but they provided little threat in attack.
At the interval Donegal were delighted to be three points in front, 0-8 to 0-5, through the accuracy of Michael Doherty, Kevin Cassidy, Adrian Sweeney and Michael Hegarty.
Des Dolan kicked all but one of Westmeath's points, the other score coming from Alan Mangan.
Westmeath enjoyed the lead twice in the second half, on the first occasion in the 49th minute when corner forward PJ Ward finished off a fine move to the net and again seven minutes later following another Des Dolan point.
However, that proved to be the end of the midlanders' challenge.
For the first time the game opened up and produced some exciting passages as Donegal began to establish a stranglehold on proceedings.
Bolstered by the introduction of Stephen McDermott, they added four points in a 12 minute spell from Michael Doherty (two) and one each from Kevin Cassidy and Christy Toye to turn a one-point deficit into a three-point lead as the game moved into injury-time.
Westmeath, who had scored two early second half points from Des Dolan for a one-point lead, went 16 minutes without a score, between the 21st and 37th minutes.
Their only reward in the face of Donegal's late revival was an injury-time point from top scorer Dolan. However, by that time Donegal's place in the final was secure.
