Double title prospect for Munster

Men's Hockey: It's been a rousing weekend for the game in Cork. Following Munster's capture of the under-21 interprovincial title from Leinster, the draw for the fourth round of the Irish Senior Cup yielded undemanding home ties for Harlequins and C of I against Avoca and Railway Union, respectively.

At Harlequin Park on Saturday, a goal by David Hobbs, who combined with Philip McLoughlin after 15 minutes, earned a 1-0 victory for the Munster juniors over the defending champions.

Although Leinster eagerly sought an equaliser, forcing nine short corners to one, the efforts of Peter McConnell and Paddy Good in particular brought no reward against top-quality defending by Mark Ruddle, Karl Burns and John Hobbs.

So, having beaten Ulster (3-1) on Friday, Munster took the trophy and with the senior team leading the table in the ongoing senior championship, there are prospects of a double, involving many members of the junior squad.

Yesterday, though the outcome was academic, a last-minute goal by John Jermyn gave Munster a 4-3 win over the Universities while Leinster and Ulster played an exhilarating 3-3 draw. Alan Giles, Peter McConnell and Stephen Tilson scored with some verve for Leinster while Chris Barnes (2) and Peter Marlin were on the target for Ulster.

Reverting to the Senior Cup, it's been a bad draw for Ulster, notably with the top sides, Instonians and Lisnagarvey being matched against each other on February 16th. As regards Leinster's leading pair, Glenanne can cope with a home game against Banbridge while Pembroke Wanderers, now fully equipped, should overpower Monkstown.

Next weekend, Glenanne who overpowered understrength UCD 7-0 in the Leinster League on Saturday, can virtually wrap up the title if they can beat Pembroke. Their midfield powerhouse Stephen Butler has been named Computershare Player of the Month for December.
