Golf: Leslie Walker followed his success in the £18,000 BT North West pro-am tournament at City of Derry over the weekend with another top spot in the PGA Headwind Tankard finals at Royal Tara yesterday.
The Foxrock assistant carded a 70 - two shots clear of Michael Allan with four players sharing third place a further stroke adrift.
Adare Manor 12-handicapper Tom Hickey was an easy winner of the men's amateur prize with 41 points while Josie Walshe, who plays off 36 out of Mountrath, was best in the women's section with 40 points. Adare Manor took the team prize with professional John Coyle and amateurs Tom Hickey and Margaret Wallace dovetailing perfectly to return 83 points.
Tennis: Tennis Ireland have handed an opportunity to young aspirants ahead of this weekend's Four Nations championship in Hatfield.
Playing without Owen Casey, Scott Barron, Yvonne Doyle and Elsa O'Riain are the obvious risks but, call-ups for new caps Stephen Taylor and Neil Fagan can prove worthwhile given the excellent form of both players this summer.
Likewise Emma Murphy and Sarah McIntyre are well worth their places at girls under-18 level.
The full selection is: Men - S Taylor, N Fagan. Women - K Nugent, G Niland. Non-playing captain: Peter Lowther. Boys - N Boyle, M Finnegan. Girls - S McIntyre, E Murphy. Nonplaying captain: Roger Geraghty. Junior Boys - D Rowan, P Morrissey. Girls - A Wynne, K McNulty. Non-playing captain: Jim Watt.
Cycling: Spain's Roberto Laiseka of the Euskaltel team won the 165km 11th stage of the Tour of Spain yesterday.
Spain's Angel Casero of the Festina team captured the leaders gold jersey from compatriot Santos Gonzalez of the Once team.
Laiseka finished ahead of Spaniards Carlos Sastre and Santiago Blanco while Spain's Roberto Heras finished fourth but not far enough ahead of Casero to take the overall lead.
Gonzalez and 1997 Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich of Germany tired on the final climb though both men are in range of the gold jersey. Early leader Abraham Olano of Spain looks to have blown his chances of victory.
Italy's Andrea Peron was the first to attack. He was rapidly joined by Kelme team members Fernando Escartin, Oscar Sevilla, Santiago Botero and Jose-Luis Rubiera, accompanied by Laiseka, Sastre and Blanco.
This group got over the last climb with three minutes advance on the main bunch. Laiseka made a stage-winning attack to beat out Sastre and Blanco.
