Home Farm/Everton and Galway United gave little proof of their promotion potential as they played out a featureless 1-1 draw at Whitehall yesterday.

Galway perhaps enjoyed the better chances overall but ultimately the justice of the match was that neither side won what was generally a pretty poor spectacle.

Home Farm scored after 32 minutes when Galway defender Harry Costello toe-poked Liam Kelly's cross into his own net after good approach play from Owen Heary.

Galway, who would subsequently lose Sean O'Neill who was taken to hospital at half-time with a suspected broken ankle, equalised seven minutes later.

Michael Quirke and Barbados international Eric Levine played a short corner and when Billy Clery crashed his shot from the cross off the bar, Aidan Forde followed up to shoot home from 10 yards.

A severe case of deja vu for Limerick and Athlone as they repeated their drab 0-0 League Cup draw at Hogan Park.

Athlone's Tommy Hewitt did have the ball in the Limerick net after seven minutes but it was ruled out for offside.

Jason O'Connor had limerick's best chance when heading over from a Jason Purcell free-kick two minutes before half-time.

Neil Dowling scored twice inside the final eight minutes to give Monaghan United their best start in many season's with a 2-0 win over Longford Town at Strokestown Road on Saturday night.

Dowling put Monaghan into the lead with a long-range shot in the 82nd minute. He then added a cheekily taken second with virtually the last kick of the game.

Waterford put their bad start to the season behind them by beating a disjointed Cobh Ramblers 21 at St Colman's Park.

Player/manager Tommy Lynch gave them the perfect start with his first goal for the club in the fifth minute.

Tommy Hewitt then punished sloppy defending by Cobh to head Waterford's second goal 10 minutes into the second-half. Tommy Butler got Cobh's consolation goal 20 minutes from time.
