Drogheda Utd - 3 Cork City - 1 Drogheda United picked up a much-needed win when they proved too skilful for Pat Dolan's Cork City in an entertaining game, which the home side dominated throughout, at O2 Park on Saturday night.
Cork started well but Drogheda went in front after 17 minutes. Mark Quinless broke clear on the right, raced to the end-line and crossed the ball into the box, where Declan O'Brien hammered it home.
The second half was only four minutes old when Drogheda struck again. Man-of-the-match Quinless was chopped down by Alan Bennett and Andy Myler sent Michael Devine the wrong way from the spot.
With Drogheda in cruise control, Cork managed to pull one back nine minutes from time, when George O'Callaghan scored at the near post.
However, Cork's joy was short-lived. One minute later Neil Tarrant was pulled down by Dan Murray and, in an action replay, Myler slotted the penalty.
