Former Dublin GAA star Jack Sheedy scored an own goal to set Drogheda on their way into the FAIL Cup second round as the First, Division leaders fitness finally told during extra time in a disappointing first round tie at Westmanstown yesterday.

The unfortunate Sheedy put through his own goal in the second minute of extra time as he at tempted to clear a cross into the Garda box by Drogheda's Declan Roche. The ball bobbled slightly as he came to meet it and his left foot shot it past his stranded goalkeeper Gary Kelly.

Drogheda were well on top by that stage but it was Garda, however who created the better chances over the 90 minutes. Their danger Podge Hearne, hit the bar with a cross on 21 minutes before Colm, was good opportunity four minutes later when his half hit shot, following Hearne's low, across was somehow scrambled clear by the Drogheda defence.

Drogheda did have their chances in the first half, most notably Kelly making a fine save from Roche, but the had a right let off inside five minutes of the second half.

A superb flowing move saw Hearne play O'Hanlon inside Drogheda left back Colm Tresson. Man of the match, Derek Mulhall, got a slight touch to O Hanlon's cross to inadvertently set up Declan Schutt at the back post. But he scuffed his shot and Drogheda goalkeeper Jody Byrne, got back to clear off the line" with his feet.

Drogheda dominated thereafter but only once seriously threatened the Garda goal in normal time when Mark Ennis forced Hearne to clear his lob off the line.

Drogheda got the break they generally deserved thanks to Sheedy's own goal two minutes into the first, period of extra time. Tresson then put some gloss on Drogheda's win with their second goal on 102 minutes when shooting home at the far post from Micky Harte's driven free kick.
