Dunnamaggin pulled off a brilliant win against all the odds when claiming their first Kilkenny Senior Hurling Club victory at Nowlan Park yesterday. The winners, who are only two years in the senior grade, upset champions Young Ireland's in a magnificent final in front of a crowd of over 13,000 people.

The winners enjoyed an explosive start and scored two goals within three minutes. The first was a lucky effort after centre back Eamon Kennedy drilled a long free into the Young Ireland's' goalmouth and the goalkeeper let the ball slip through his fingers.

The second from Sean Ryan was a tremendous effort from a bad angle. After 20 minutes they led by 2-4 to 0-2 and the champions barely got a look-in. A minute later Jack Carey made a goal for Charlie Carter and Young Ireland's at last got their rhythm going.

At half-time Young Ireland's were somewhat unlucky to be 1-3 to 2-6 behind. Minutes before the interval D J Carey eluded the Dunnamaggin defence but his fullblooded effort from four yards brought a tremendous save from goalkeeper Anthony McCormack.

The hurling in the second half was not as good as what had gone before, but nonetheless it was still good. Young Ireland's chased but they got little change out of a winner's defence in which Tom and Noel Hickey and Eamon Kennedy were stars. The winners' only real moment of unease came three minutes from the end. That was when D J Carey scored a goal from a 21yard free and then Ciaran Phelan had a point to reduce the difference to a goal.

However, dogged Dunnamaggin held on to claim their first title in their first senior final.
