Dunne the younger gets his first start

CHAMPIONSHIP 2002: Tipperary have made two changes for Sunday's Munster final against Waterford in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Benny Dunne of Toomevara comes into the team for his first championship start and Lar Corbett returns after missing the semi-final win over Limerick with an injury.

The players making way for Dunne and Corbett are John O'Brien and Eugene O'Neill, both of whom were replaced in the semi-final.

Dunne's arrival on the scene is a little surprising in one sense. A brother of county captain Tommy, he played a number of National League matches at left wing back, the position he occupied during Tommevara's run to the Tipperary county championship. Brought into the side against Limerick after 40 minutes, he played well as a wing forward and scored two points.

Afterwards manager Nicky English joked that "not even Benny sees himself as a forward", but his effective display has won him a place at right wing forward.

Corbett reverts to the corner forward position where he made his debut last season and which he vacated to accommodate the return of Eugene O'Neill to the team in last year's All-Ireland series. Corbett lined out at wing forward in last year's All-Ireland final win over Galway and started in the same position against Clare in this year's championship.

Good news for the county is that the injury crisis, which threatened to derail Tipperary's Munster defence, has cleared. Eddie Enright and Paul Ormonde are both fully fit and named among the substitutes and the only player not available is panellist Johnny Enright, who has a hand injury.

Both Enright and Ormonde were seen as major losses before the championship but their replacements, Noel Morris and Donnacha Fahey, have risen to the challenge exceptionally well. English had made it clear all along that he wouldn't change members of a winning team if they were playing well.

For Waterford, Ken McGrath has been passed fit and will start at right wing forward in Sunday's clash with Tipperary. The return of the star forward is one of just two changes from the side that beat Cork in the semi-final, though there are several positional switches.

A severe shoulder injury had denied McGrath a starting place in the Cork game, though he did appear as a substitute and ultimately contributed the key score in the 1-16 to 1-15 victory. Younger brother Eoin McGrath was also a doubtful starter for the Páirc Uí Chaoimh match because of a recent bout of tonsillitis, but regains his place in the attack, this time starting at right corner forward rather than the left.

Former Tipperary man Andy Maloney is the player to lose out in the attack to make way for Ken McGrath's return. Maloney played at centre forward the last day, but Paul Flynn has now been moved into the position with McGrath on the wing.

With Eoin Kelly now starting in the left corner, and John Mullane also switching from left corner to right, it means that full forward Seamus Prendergast is the only player among the forwards to retain his starting position from the last day.

The full back line is unchanged, but Brian Greene is given a place at wing back for his first start since the 1998 campaign. Greene had been troubled with a hamstring in the run-up to the Cork game, though he also appeared as a substitute.

With Peter Queally moving up to midfield to partner Tony Browne, Dave Bennett is the player to lose out, being named among a substitute list that also includes Maloney.
