Dwyer a big loss

Castlecomer golf club lost one of its great supporters with the recent death of Michael Dwyer

Castlecomer golf club lost one of its great supporters with the recent death of Michael Dwyer. Club captain in 1955, Dwyer joined the Castlecomer, which was then based in Cloudmount, in 1948. The club was very much in its infancy, and with the help of many of the business people in the town, Dwyer played a prominent role in its development during the early years. He was a consistent supporter of club competitions, both mixed and singles, and won the Canon McNamara Cup three times. He also represented the club in inter-club competitions, and was a member of the South Leinster team which were runners-up in the competition in 1964.

The stories of other members and Dwyer's own recollections of the early days of the club often made good listening at the 19th. At a specially-convened meeting the club passed a vote of sympathy to his wife Kathleen and all the Dwyer family.
