Castlecomer CS 3-5 Colaiste Eoin 1-6:WING FORWARD Charles Dwyer scored 2-3 from placed balls at Carlow yesterday as Castlecomer CS survived a second-half comeback by the Dublin school.
An Oisín Ó Ruairc point from play opened the scoring for the Dublin side in the first minute, but, playing with the strong breeze, the Kilkenny school were quickly into their stride.
Eoin Bergin scored the first goal when he doubled on a ball close to goal, and in the 20th minute Dwyer scored the first of his goals when he converted a penalty.
The Dublin side were left with a mountain to climb when they conceded a free which was brought forward to the 20-metre mark for dissent. Dwyer’s powerful shot found the net to give his side a 3-4 to 0-2 interval lead.
The game never sparked in the second half. Castlecomer held what they had. Ó Ruairc was Coláiste Eoins main threat. Who knows what might have happened if he had managed to find the net from a tight angle at the end of the third quarter?
His goal in injury time came too late to save his side and Castlecomer advanced.
