Portuguese Open:First round leader Simon Dyson tumbled to a front-nine 41 when he resumed the Portuguese Open at Oitavos today.
One ahead of the field overnight Dyson followed bogeys at the first, fourth and sixth with a double bogey seven on the long eighth as he fell from four under par to one over.
It left a four-way tie at the top and among the quartet was Paul Broadhurst, trying to become just the fifth player in European Tour history — after Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Tiger Woods (twice) — to win an event three years in a row.
Broadhurst was out in 35 to stand three under along with fellow Englishmen Nick Dougherty and Ross McGowan and also Scot Stephen Gallacher, the only one of the four to have finished his second round.
Gallacher, nephew of former Ryder Cup captain Bernard, birdied two of the last three for a level par 71 and afterwards praised the coaching of 75-year-old Bob Torrance.
"His enthusiasm is incredible," said the 32-year-old, whose only Tour win came at the Dunhill links championship at St Andrews three years ago.
Barry Lane, whose closing quintuple bogey nine on the same course two years ago handed the title to Broadhurst, shared the lead with six to play, but had four bogeys and a double bogey in them for a 75 and two over aggregate.
Following a disappointing day for the Irish yesterday, Paul McGinley, Damien McGrane, Peter Lawrie, Gary Murphy and amateur Rory McIlroy are all looking to perform better today.
