Galway-Mayo IT - 1-15 Mary Immaculate College - 1-5SIGERSON CUP/First Round: Highly efficient Galway-Mayo IT, inspired by Kildare star Dermot Earlie in midfield, carried too much power for Mary Immaculate College in the opening round of the Sigerson Cup in Limerick yesterday.
The home side had their hopes raised after Kerry's Declan Quille cancelled out an early point from Ciaran Cromer, but then Earlie, assisted by Galway's Joe Bergin, began to dominate in midfield. They helped GMIT to a comfortable 0-9 to 0-3 lead at the interval, with Alan O'Donovan their main marksman.
Despite the best efforts of Liam Buckley and Tommy Stack, it was over for MICE after 40 minutes when the industrious Ciaran Comer found the net, and it mattered little to the result that Quille broke away at the other end to beat goalkeeper Brian O'Donoghue.
GMIT finished on a high with further points from Joe Bergin, O'Donovan and Earlie.
