St Kieran's College 4-6 Castlecomer CS 1-7:THREE first-half goals helped St Kieran's College retain the Leinster Colleges Senior Hurling A League title at Heywood Community School's impressive new all-weather pitch yesterday.
All scored inside the opening quarter, the goals helped the All-Ireland champions get one over their local rivals.
St Kieran’s were rocked after just two minutes when Castlecomer forward Charles Dwyer sent a pile-driver of a free to the net, but they hit back in ruthless fashion. County minor John Power blasted a penalty to the Comer net within 60 seconds and Michael Brennan tucked away a loose ball after Richie Reid’s shot came back off a post in the sixth minute.
Two points from Stephen Daly (65, free) helped Castlecomer to narrow the gap, but a third Kieran’s goal, from Aidan Cleere, left them in a comfortable position.
Further points from Thomas O’Hanrahan and Brennan, saw Kieran’s two goals clear at half-time (3-3 to 1-3).
Another quick scoring blitz left Castlecomer chasing what looked a lost cause within two minutes of the restart. Power got the ball rolling for the champions, before Thomas O’Hanrahan saw his shot drop into the Castlecomer net.
Although Castlecomer refused to yield, they couldn’t bridge the gap, although Charles Dwyer (0-3) and Robert Moran did reduce the deficit in the final quarter.
