RONNIE ROSENTHAL caught Wolves cold in last night's fourth round replay at sub zero Molineux. And Tottenham colleague Teddy Sheringham finished off Mark McGhee's first division side after only nine minutes.
Spurs boast the best away record in the Premiership and that underlined the task facing their opponents after the early blast of two goals inside three minutes. Tottenham were celebrating after just seven minutes following a Ruel Fox inspired counter attack.
Skipper Gary Mabbutt had cleared from a corner and Fox ran three quarters of the length of the pitch before slipping a pass for Rosenthal to prod his shot through the legs of goalkeeper Mike Stowell.
As if that wasn't bad enough, Spurs cashed in again after nine minutes. Sheringham's 21st goal of the season followed a prodigious clearance by goalkeeper Ian Walker, defender Andy Thompson misjudging a back header and inviting the England striker to score.
Sheringham does not miss opportunities like that and it looked as though Spurs had well and truly killed off the tie after 17 minutes when Colin Calderwood claimed number three. But his effort, which came after Sol Campbell's header had rebounded from the bar, was in a explicably ruled out for offside.
That escape finally convinced Wolves that they still had a chance, but for all the determination of former England striker1 Steve Bull, they rarely looked like shaking Spurs out of their professional approach.
With Mabbutt and Calderwood bottling up central defence and Campbell fully committed in midfield, Spurs were content to sit back and await the occasional opening.
And they should have scored a third after 74 minutes when Chris Armstrong somehow fired over from less than three yards.
Darren Ferguson then denied Sheringham with a goal line clearance while Bull could count himself unlucky not to feature on the score sheet.
His efforts were almost rewarded after 83 minutes when, his 25 yard drive produced a superb save from Walker.
